Jobs in Future
Technologies @ ORNL
Description
The Future Technologies group at the Oak
Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks computer scientists to
investigate the
architectures of and software systems for high-end computer systems.
Areas of interest include (not exclusive)
- microprocessor and interconnect technology,
- emerging computing technologies, such as FPGAs, massively
multithreaded processors,
- computer systems performance evaluation and simulation,
- performance modeling, prediction, and workload characterization,
- programming languages, emerging programming models,
- messaging protocols and software,
- autonomic computing and fault-tolerance,
- operating systems for HPC,
- parallel I/O, parallel filesystems, and
- tools for scalable performance analysis.
Research activities
include, but are not limited to:
- Rapid prototyping and evaluation of experimental systems,
including hardware, software, and algorithms.
- Studying performance of existing and future high-performance
computer systems under various workload characteristics through
measurement, modeling, and simulation.
- Publishing papers in high-quality refereed conferences and
journals.
- Actively collaborating with industry, academia, government labs,
and applications developers.
A staff position requires a M.S. or Ph.D. in computer science or
computational sciences with recent leading-edge research experience on
high end computing systems. The position also requires demonstrated
experience in software development on parallel computers using message
passing, OpenMP, and Fortran 90, C, or C++, along with expertise
in at least one of the following areas: architectures, interconnects,
operating systems, compilers, runtime systems, programming tools,
parallel I/O, and parallel filesystems. Candidates must have a proven
record of research accomplishments
and a strong desire to participate in research efforts in a team
environment.
Accordingly, the candidate must demonstrate clear communication skills.

About the area
Located in East
Tennessee, Knoxville is nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky
Mountains, amongst shimmering blue lakes and rolling green valleys.
East Tennessee offers vacationers a rich array of outdoor recreational
activities. Mild weather assures visitors many delightful and memorable
adventures in hiking, backpacking, bicycling, whitewater rafting,
boating, fishing, and swimming.
Knoxville hosts the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee
(UT). Housed within UT is the Joint Institute for Computational Science
(JICS). JICS was established by The Science Alliance, a Center of
Excellence in
Tennessee, as a consortium among UT, ORNL, and other participating
academic
institutions within Tennessee, and delegated the task of facilitating
high-performance computing research.
Located nearby is the historic city of Oak Ridge.
Few areas in the country can boast such a concentration of
scientific personnel and technical resources. Because of the proximity
between UT and ORNL, a wealth of scientific research collaborations
abound.
Knoxvillians and visitors alike savor an enchanting assortment of
cultural diversions---the Knoxville Museum of Art, bluegrass and jazz
musicians,
ballroom, swing, and country/western dances, riverboat excursions, and
fine
dining coupled with the warm hospitality of the South.
Other major cities within a few hours drive include Atlanta,
Nashville, Asheville, Charlotte, Greenville, Columbia, and Frankfort.
